With Gallimore, Urban, Osa and Bohanna already established to almost certainly make the team, does McCarthy even add another DT? Trysten is now two defensive coordinators from Rod Marinelli falling in love with him in a hotel room and fighting for him on draft night. Just last season coach McCarthy said he likes six edge rushers and four at DT. Trysten Hill is one of the uncertain coin flips going for a spot on the 53 man roster. A proven run defender with edge rush ability is likely on the team, and given his two year contract doesn’t have an out until after this season, he should be a given to be the eighth defensive lineman for the Cowboys. A move to a 4-3 end could help unlock Basham’s edge rush potential. Last season Basham ended the year with a top ten run stop win rate, also adding 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles all while possibly playing out of position as an OLB in a 3-4. Basham was a name reportedly really well liked by Will McClay in the 2017 draft.

Tarell Basham was a free agent signing by the Cowboys that seemingly ended the Aldon Smith experiment after one season. Last season the Cowboys started week one with ten defensive lineman on the 53 man roster, so with four starters established, and three rookies, that leaves three more open spots to fill.

All three of these picks should make the 53 man roster and contribute year one, just temper expectations for the rookies. He is there to keep the linebackers free to run and make plays by eating up blockers in front of him. He will play straight up NT and one technique without the versatility of the other DL selections. Quinton Bohanna is a type of player never drafted during the Will McClay era before. He can also play the five technique and hold up well enough.

while an ideal edge setter as a 4-3 DE, Golston can slide to three technique in what’s known as a “Nascar Package” of four pass rushers on the DL. Chauncey Golston brings that type of versatility as well. Osa Odighizuwa, brings an ability to play three technique in a nickel set, a one technique on long yardage passing downs, and a five technique in an odd man front.

These DL prospects show promise and versatility, but expecting starter quality impact is unreasonable. It took Lawrence multiple years to become the great defender he is now, Hill was inactive as a second round selection, and showed great strides before his injury last year, Gallimore will be the next to show what a year in an NFL weight room and locker room does to make you a better player. Fans sometimes forget that draft picks are selected on potential and need time to grow.
